On this ride with Kaskazi Horse Safaris in Arusha National Park, you’ll traverse the trails of the Iron Lady, who migrated to German East Africa in 1906 with her husband to establish and run a farm.

During World War I, Margarete earned the nickname Iron Lady due to her cat-and-mouse game with English soldiers.

Arusha National Park is located in the northeast of Tanzania between Mount Meru and its more famous sibling, Mount Kilimanjaro. Impressive landscapes and a fascinating array of wildlife make the park truly special. From savannah to rainforest and alpine mountain regions to desert, the variety of vegetation zones distinguishes Arusha National Park. Ride through the rainforest, alongside one of the many craters and lakes in the park, and observe the vibrant wildlife. Day 1

Arrival

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, the Kaskazi team will warmly welcome you and transport you to our Polo Club, situated approximately 35 minutes away. Upon arrival, take some time to settle in and get to know the other participants of the safari. A brief briefing will be held during lunch, and in the afternoon, we will embark on our first ride together. This provides an excellent opportunity to familiarize yourself with your horse or four-legged partner before our journey into the National Park the following day. The afternoon ride takes place in our wildlife reserve, offering the chance to encounter zebras, wildebeests, elands, and, with luck, one of Africa’s most elusive and rare antelopes, the gerenuk (also known as the giraffe gazelle). We’ll return to the Polo Club in the evening for a refreshing shower and sundowners before dinner.

Day 2

Morning in Arusha National Park:

You will be woken up with coffee and tea. After breakfast and a drive of about 20 minutes to Arusha National Park, the ride begins into one of East Africa’s most beautiful parks. The landscape shifts from open grassland to rainforest. Here, you have the chance to spot elephants, buffalo, and leopards, as well as rare animals such as the suni antelope, Hartlaub’s turaco, and many more. Along the way, there will be a stop for lunch and a short siesta. After the meal, the ride continues through leopard territory, passing the home of Margarete Trappe—known as the “Iron Lady” of World War I. Following this eventful ride, you will arrive at the camp at the foot of Mount Meru in time for a shower and sundowner drinks. Afterward, you will enjoy dinner under the stars.

Day 3

Exploration and Momella Lakes:

This morning, wake up to the chattering Colobus monkeys. After breakfast, we’ll ride through the area where the film Hatari with John Wayne was shot. Halfway through our morning ride, we’ll begin to climb with our horses to reach the massive fig tree arch, large enough for five horses to pass underneath. Continuing through the rainforest, we’ll pass by a breathtaking waterfall at 2000 m above sea level. After lunch, we’ll ride back to our camp, offering you the option to use vehicles to visit the Momella Lakes and, hopefully, spot some hippos and beautiful water birds. At the lake, we’ll enjoy sundowners before returning to the camp for dinner and a shower.

Day 4

Departure:

The morning calls of the Colobus monkeys will wake us up. Breakfast is served, and then we set out with our horses toward civilization. Enjoy the last morning in the saddle in this magical place, full of wildlife, stories, and tales. In the late morning, we’ll reach the exit of Arusha National Park, bidding farewell to our faithful four-legged companions. You now have several options – you can either go on another safari or spend one or two more nights at the Polo Club and engage in some polo for a few days.

Night 1: For your initial night, you’ll stay in our comfortable, spacious tents at the permanent camp, providing breathtaking views of Mount Meru and, weather permitting, even the majestic Kilimanjaro. From the camp, catch glimpses of our Polo Clubhouse and the two polo fields, where zebras and wildebeests often graze. We offer 10 fully equipped tents, each featuring its private bathroom, flush toilet, and plush pillows. Moreover, all our tents are fitted with electricity and running water. Enjoy access to Wi-Fi in the clubhouse and make use of the pool, fitness center, and spa. Indulge in refreshing drinks and delectable homemade meals served at the clubhouse.

Nights 2 and 3: The “mobile camp” comprises thoughtfully designed tents, ensuring utmost comfort for your experience. These spacious tents, approximately 8m² each, are equipped with mosquito nets for optimal air circulation and insect protection. Furnished with folding beds, cotton bedding, and solar lighting, each tent features a chair and washstand shared with your tent partner. Individual bush toilets and showers are provided. Culinary delights are orchestrated by Mark English, a South African gourmet chef, crafting delicious and artistic dishes. Breakfast follows a traditional cowboy style, complete with freshly squeezed juices and exotic fruits. Lunch unfolds beneath the shade of a tree, either delivered by vehicles or carried in our saddlebags. Dinner entails a 3-course menu, a fusion of regional and international cuisine, complemented by freshly baked bread, crisp salads, and aromatic herbs. Locally sourced beverages round off this culinary experience.
