In the northern reaches of Tanzania lies our partner, Kaskazi Horse Safari. The safari horse stables are situated just outside Arusha, offering an awe-inspiring view of Mount Meru, and, on clear days, Kilimanjaro.

Day 1

Arrival

Upon your arrival, the Kaskazi team will greet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and escort you to the Polo and Golf Club grounds in a comfortable half-hour drive. Spend the night at a boutique hotel on-site, providing an opportunity to settle in and meet your fellow safari participants. The lead guide will join you for a sundowner and dinner at the lodge, offering a briefing on the safari’s itinerary and safety guidelines.

Day 2

Arusha National Park Ride

Begin the day with a wake-up call for coffee and tea, followed by breakfast available throughout the morning. Around 11:00 AM, a brief 20-minute drive takes us to Arusha National Park. Our horses await us, and we embark on a ride through one of East Africa’s most stunning parks. Witness the transformation of landscapes from open grassland to lush rainforest. Encounter elephants, buffalos, leopards, and rare species like klipspringer, red duiker, silvery-cheeked hornbill, and more. Riding through the forest canopy creates a truly magical experience. Our route includes a lunch stop and a brief siesta. After lunch, continue through leopard territory, passing by the former home of Margarete Trappe, known as the ‘Iron Lady’ from World War I. Reach our camp at the base of Mount Meru in time for a shower and sundowner, followed by dinner under the stars.

Day 3

Colobus Monkeys and Waterfalls

Wake up to the lively calls of colobus monkeys. After breakfast, ride through the area where the film “Hatari” with John Wayne was filmed. Mid-morning, embark on an uphill climb with our horses to reach a massive fig tree, large enough to accommodate five horses. Continue riding through the rainforest to a breathtaking waterfall at 2,000 meters above sea level for lunch. On the way back to camp, pass by another 30-meter-high waterfall. Optionally, venture to the Momella Lakes by vehicle to spot hippos and beautiful water birds. Enjoy sundowners by the lake before returning to camp for dinner and a refreshing shower.

Day 4

Towards Kilimanjaro

Wake up to the sun, savor a delicious breakfast, and mount your horse to leave Arusha National Park behind. Head east towards Kilimanjaro, leaving Mount Meru behind as a distant silhouette. Ride through Tanzanian farmland and the Maasai steppe, offering picturesque landscapes and cultural encounters. Utilize the cooler early morning hours to cover a good distance. Have lunch under a large acacia tree, sometimes near a dam where the Maasai water their livestock and we allow our horses to drink. Enjoy about 3 hours for lunch and a short siesta to recharge for the next leg of our ride. In the afternoon, our route takes us through wildlife areas and open plains, reaching our night camp before sunset.

Day 5

Elephant Tracking

Early rise with tea or coffee, followed by a bush breakfast. Spend the day tracking elephants, navigating through dense bushland and acacia forests. Return to camp for lunch before an afternoon ride. Reach our familiar camp again before sunset for another night in this remote and extraordinary place on earth.

Day 6

Towards ‘Seven Sisters’

Start the day with an English breakfast, mount your horse, and begin the safari towards the ‘Seven Sisters.’ After passing the seven hills, ride through the village of Sinya and have lunch under a shady tree. The terrain changes from open grassland to wooded areas, offering a chance to see zebras, giraffes, and wildebeests. Keep an eye out for the elusive gerenuk antelope. Spend the night at a magical location, hopefully with clear skies for a view of the four mighty mountains – Meru, Namanga, Longido, and the legendary Kilimanjaro.

Day 7

Towards the Kenyan Border

Rise with the sun and ride towards the Kenyan border, spending the day tracking elephants. Hopefully, witness these giants from horseback. Spend the night observing the fleeing animals in the hollows, always alert to predators. Hopefully, experience a clear night to gaze at a portion of the breathtaking mountain range.

Day 8

Departure

On the final morning, conclude the safari with a leisurely, hearty breakfast. Shortly after, you’ll be picked up for the approximately 3-hour journey back to civilization. If your return flight is later in the day, you can opt for a day room and lunch in advance.

The accommodation

On the Kilimanjaro ride you stay in 2 types of lodging. The first night at a luxuary lodge the rest of the time you will stay in mobile safari camps.

The Lodge

a boutique hotel.

On the first night, you will stay in a boutique hotel on the grounds of the Polo Club, from where you will have a great view of Mount Meru and, if visibility is good, even of Kilimanjaro. The 10-room Golf Safari House is a short buggy ride from the prestigious Kilimanjaro Golf Club. The rooms are stylishly and comfortably furnished and have a private bathroom, a standing fan, a safe, coffee, and tea-making facilities. Modern bright colors and furniture are combined with traditional dhow wood from the African coast.

You have access to the WIFI in the clubhouse and you can use the swimming pool. SPA treatments can be organized upon request.

All drinks and delicious home-cooked food are served to you in the clubhouse. Drinks are not included in the price at the lodge.

Mobile Camp

are tents that we specially designed for such purposes.

They are very comfortable and spacious at 3 by 3 meters. Mosquito nets are placed on the door and on the windows to achieve good air circulation and at the same time have an insect screen. Each tent is equipped with a carpet, towel rail, bedside table, water bottle, bed with cotton linen, and a solar light. In front of each tent is a veranda with chairs and a vanity, which you share with your tent partner. Each tent has its own bush toilet and bucket shower.

Meals are prepared by a professionally trained bush chef. Mark English is a gourmet chef from South Africa and is always creating delicious and artistic dishes on one of our safaris. Breakfast is traditional cowboy style, freshly squeezed juices, and exotic African fruits are served. Lunch takes place outdoors under a shady tree. It is either brought to us by the support vehicles or we transport it in our saddlebags. Dinner is a 3-course menu with a mix of regional and international cuisine. It is always served with freshly baked bread, fresh salads, and herbs.
The drinks also come from the region.
