Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival

You will be picked up from your hotel in Nairobi or directly from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transferred to Wilson Airport. From there, catch a 10 a.m. flight to Masai Mara. Upon arrival, meet your guides who will take you to your first camp situated on the banks of the Mara River, known for its resident hippos. After lunch, take some time to relax before getting acquainted with your horse. Enjoy a leisurely evening ride lasting about two hours.

Day 2

Mara River Hippo Camp

Our day starts early with a cup of tea or coffee, followed by a ride that includes the first crossing of the Mara River. A light breakfast awaits us back at camp. Later, a jeep safari provides excellent photo opportunities. Return to camp for lunch, followed by time for a siesta. In the afternoon, embark on another ride before returning for a shower. Optionally, a sundowner drive or a short night game drive may precede dinner.

Day 3

Escarpment Soit Olololo Camp:
After breakfast, depart around 9:00 a.m. Riding south towards the park’s border, we encounter the famous wildebeest crossings at the river. After the crossing, continue southwest to the Mara Triangle. Around 12:30 p.m., meet the vehicle bringing our picnic lunch. After lunch, at 4:00 p.m., follow the ascent of Soit Olololol Escarpment, reaching the camp on the edge of the cliff by 5:30 p.m., offering a beautiful view of the entire Mara ecosystem.

Day 4

Olare Orok Camp

The next morning, ride down the steep slope after breakfast, crossing the river at the same spot as the previous evening. Continue west and downhill into the enchanting Olare Orok Valley. Enjoy a picturesque landscape during a lunch break with a picnic (around 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.). Reach our camp for the night by 5:00 p.m. After a cup of tea, there should be enough time for a game drive with sundowners before dinner under the stars.

Day 5

Olare Orok Camp

Today, explore the fantastic area on horseback, by jeep, and on foot. Excellent photo opportunities abound as we get up close with buffalo, elephants, lions, and possibly cheetahs and leopards.

Day 6

Olare Lamun Camp

Prepare for our third move as we leave camp early in the morning for the longest ride of the week. Start our nearly 50 km journey at 7:00 a.m., with a picnic breakfast between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. Continue riding until 1:30 p.m. and reach Ol Kinyei Conservancy for lunch. At 4:00 p.m., saddle up again, completing the last leg of the day to arrive at Olare Lamun Camp, nestled in an acacia grove by a small stream at the southern edge of the Loita Plains.

Day 7

Olare Lamun Camp

You’ll be awakened early for a morning ride before a light breakfast. Afterward, embark on a game drive and a scenic hike up Mount Oloiburmut. Return to camp for lunch and a break. In the afternoon, around 4:00 p.m., either drive or ride to a nearby Maasai village for a visit.

Day 8

Departure

A final morning ride before bidding farewell to the horses. After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for an 11 a.m. flight back to Nairobi (landing at 12 p.m. at Wilson Airport). Optionally, a taxi can take you to Nairobi for sightseeing and shopping, or you’ll be directly transferred to a hotel where a day room awaits you (included in the tour price). The subsequent transfer to the airport for international flights in the evening is also included.

Embark on a challenging 250 km hiking adventure across the Maasai Mara, spending nights in mobile safari tents across four diverse camps. Following the safari, luxuriate for 2 nights at the opulent Deloraine House. During this safari, you will stay in mobile camps as well as Deloraine House utilising the following camps: Mara River Hippo Camp, Mara North Conservancy; Soit Olololo Escarpment Camp, Siria Escarpment; Olare Orok Camp, Mara North Conservancy & Olare Lamun Camp, Ol Kinyei & Naibosho Conservancies.

Mobile Camps

The mobile camps consist of a dining tent for meals and spacious 2.7 x 3-meter sleeping tents with camping beds, including mattresses, sheets, and bedding.

Towels, soap, and flashlights are also provided. Each tent is equipped with a solar lamp inside and a hurricane lamp outside during the night. Additionally, all tents have a pit toilet, and a hot safari bucket shower is available at any time.

Meals & Drinks

All meals are freshly prepared, featuring a typical English breakfast, light lunches, and a daily 3-course dinner. Picnics are common, and we dine under the open sky when weather permits. Throughout the journey, we carry ice cubes and are self-sufficient, even baking fresh bread over the fire daily. All house wines, beer, and spirits (except Champagne) are included. If you have specific dietary needs or other food preferences, please inform us well in advance so that we can accommodate them to the best of our ability.

Logistics

For the riding safari with Offbeat Safaris in Kenya, trucks and Land Rovers are available for a riding group of up to 12 riders. An accompanying team of 16 people manages the mobile tented camps, prepares meals, and takes care of the horses.

Deloraine House

The Deloraine Farm serves as the home of Offbeat founders Tristan and Cindy Voorspuy, steeped in fascinating Kenyan history. Some British royals, including the “Queen Mum,” have visited Deloraine. Built in 1920 by Lord Francis Scott and set amidst nearly 1,500 hectares of farmland, Deloraine stands as one of Kenya’s finest examples of colonial architecture. Your time at Deloraine will transport you to the elegant lifestyle of a bygone era.

Situated on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley at the lower slopes of Mount Londiani, Deloraine is not far from Lake Nakuru National Park (about a 45-minute drive), renowned for its flamingos and rhinos. Lake Bogoria, another beautiful park with flamingos and large herds of wildebeest, is also easily accessible.

Guests are warmly welcomed by Tristan and Lucinda Voorspuy in the familial atmosphere of Deloraine. The upper floor features three double rooms with private bathrooms and two additional rooms, suitable for a family sharing a bathroom. Three more double rooms with private bathrooms are located in the adjacent house.

On the ground floor of Deloraine, you’ll find the large salon and dining room. There’s also a veranda offering beautiful views of the tropical gardens. Meals are served in a family setting in the dining room.

Deloraine encompasses not only the residential buildings and magnificent gardens but also the stables of Offbeat Safaris with approximately 80 horses, a cross-country course with fixed obstacles, a polo field, croquet lawn, tennis court, and, of course, a swimming pool.
