The Serengeti Migration Ride takes you through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti National Park.

You will ride through the plains together with the breathtaking herds of wildebeest and discover the natural beauty of East Africa. You will also be on the lookout for the famous cats of Africa, the lion, leopard, and cheetah.

Our partner Kaskazi Horse Safari is located in the northern part of Tanzania. The stables of the safari horses are located outside of Arusha with a phenomenal view of Mount Meru and, if visibility is good, of Kilimanjaro.

Itinerary

Day 1

Getting there

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be picked up by the Kaskazi team and taken to the Polo Club, about 30 minutes away, where you will also spend your first night in a comfortable boutique hotel on the grounds of the Golf and Polo Club. There you will meet the other guest joining the safari and dinner will be served in the polo clubhouse. If there’s a polo game going on, enjoy your sundowner at the polo clubhouse.

Day 2

We depart early in the morning to catch the charter flight to Ndutu Airfield in the southern part of the Serengeti. After the flight, depending on where exactly you land, you have a 2 to 4 hour drive ahead of you. You will have already seen the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manayara or Tarangire National Park from the air before we start the safari vehicle. After checking in at the gate of Ngorongoro National Park, we drive past impressive cliffs and hills, river streams and the grassy plains famous for the Serengeti. The migratory herds of wildebeest graze here with preference in the first months of the year. With a bit of luck (depending on the weather conditions) the plains will be full of wildebeest who arrive in the thousands after the rains to enjoy the fresh grass. These plains are also the preferred breeding ground for the wildebeest – it is one of nature’s wonders that the female wildebeest delays giving birth until the grass has grown after the rains. In this way, they give their newborns the best start in life. There is enough food available to have enough strength for the upcoming long trek north into the Kenyan Mara plains.
After an interesting drive we reach our camp in the shade of beautiful acacia trees. Meet the support team, settle into your tents and then enjoy lunch in the shade of our dining tent. Afterwards you have time for a little siesta before we get to know the horses and then go on an evening ride. At sunset we return to the camp and you can enjoy a sundowner around the campfire after a hot shower. Afterwards there is a first dinner together in the bush before the adventure really starts the next morning!

Day 3

The wake up call is around 7:00 am with tea or coffee brought to your tent. After breakfast in the dining tent, we mount our horses around 8:00 am. Depending on the weather and wildlife migration, we may embark on a long morning ride and return to camp for lunch before embarking on another late afternoon game ride or game drive. Or we are out with the horses all day and meet the service team in the bush for lunch. However, the chances of spotting the large herds of wildebeest for which the area is known, giraffes feeding in the acacia trees, zebras and perhaps predators such as hyenas or jackals are very good. Dinner and overnight in camp.

Day 4 - 7

Four more days of exploring and riding across open plains, through grassy valleys with picturesque granite outcrops and the flat-topped acacia trees typical of East Africa. The route and itinerary of each day is dependent on weather conditions and wildlife movements. However, your guide will aim to ride to at least one or two other camps so you can discover new areas. On one of the mornings or afternoons, the horses get a break and we take the opportunity to visit the Olduvai Museum, one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world, with the jeeps. The museum displays fossils, items from our human ancestors, and skeletons of many extinct animals. During the safari we will often cross the historic area with the ‘cradle of human life’ on horseback.

On one of the days we start early in the morning after tea or coffee in your tent for a 3 to 4 hour ride, meet the back-up crew for an al fresco lunch in the bush and use the hot midday for a siesta before setting off to a new camp to reach it in daylight. Our back-up crew has already prepared everything for our arrival. The camp is possibly in the middle of the open plains where we are mesmerized by the sounds of the wildebeests during the main migration season. Upon arrival, refresh yourself with a cup of tea or a cold beer, then take a hot shower and enjoy dinner to the scenic sounds of the bush.

Day 8

On this day of safari, weather permitting, you will spend the night in a simpler camp protected by mosquito nets under the stars. In the morning, go on a game drive in search of the lions, cheetahs and leopards that live on the plains. You might catch a glimpse of the elephants or flamingos that love to hang out in the Lakes of Natron area. Lunch will be provided en route but you will arrive back at camp in time for afternoon tea and enjoy a fantastic dinner under the stars.

Day 9

Departure

Today you will get up early so that you can say goodbye to your faithful four-legged friend and the support team. We then drive through the Ngorongoro Highlands, stopping en route for breakfast with a fantastic view of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater. After checking out at the gate, we drive to the African Galleria, a good place to purchase art and other Tanzanian souvenirs. Shortly thereafter, your 40-minute flight departs from Manyara Airfield back to the lodge, where lunch awaits you. There is the possibility to shower (common area), but if you prefer a day room, you can book this in advance. Afterwards, you will be transferred by vehicle to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your connecting flight.

Unfortunately, this is where our adventure together ends, at least for this trip….

The accommodation

On the Serengeti ride you stay in 3 types of lodging. The first night at a luxuary lodge the rest of the time you will stay in mobile safari camps and fly camps.

The Lodge

a boutique hotel.

On the first night, you will stay in a boutique hotel on the grounds of the Polo Club, from where you will have a great view of Mount Meru and, if visibility is good, even of Kilimanjaro. The 10-room Golf Safari House is a short buggy ride from the prestigious Kilimanjaro Golf Club. The rooms are stylishly and comfortably furnished and have a private bathroom, a standing fan, a safe, coffee, and tea-making facilities. Modern bright colors and furniture are combined with traditional dhow wood from the African coast.

You have access to the WIFI in the clubhouse and you can use the swimming pool. SPA treatments can be organized upon request.

All drinks and delicious home-cooked food are served to you in the clubhouse. Drinks are not included in the price at the lodge.

Mobile Camp

are tents that we specially designed for such purposes.

They are very comfortable and spacious at 3 by 3 meters. Mosquito nets are placed on the door and on the windows to achieve good air circulation and at the same time have an insect screen. Each tent is equipped with a carpet, towel rail, bedside table, water bottle, bed with cotton linen, and a solar light. In front of each tent is a veranda with chairs and a vanity, which you share with your tent partner. Each tent has its own bush toilet and bucket shower.

Meals are prepared by a professionally trained bush chef. Mark English is a gourmet chef from South Africa and is always creating delicious and artistic dishes on one of our safaris. Breakfast is traditional cowboy style, freshly squeezed juices, and exotic African fruits are served. Lunch takes place outdoors under a shady tree. It is either brought to us by the support vehicles or we transport it in our saddlebags. Dinner is a 3-course menu with a mix of regional and international cuisine. It is always served with freshly baked bread, fresh salads, and herbs.
The drinks also come from the region.

Fly Camp

Our Fly Camp tents are made of solid mosquito nets and also have rain protection. With the exception of anxious people, sleeping in the great outdoors on a clear night with an incomparable starry sky as a canopy is a unique experience for everyone.
