The Skeleton Coast Damara Ride is a challenging expedition-style ride that explores the Skeleton Coast and remote parts of western Damaraland.

Ride off the rocky path and travel through places that may have never been explored on horseback before. Namibia has a unique and spectacular landscape. Riding here means experiencing infinite space and solitude under endless open skies.

On this expedition-style ride, set off from the infamous Skeleton Coast, head out into remote western Damaraland and then travel back towards the wild Atlantic Coast. Accompanied by experienced guides, ride far off the beaten track and travel through places that may never have been explored on horseback before.

This part of the country boasts incredible geology that is ‘out-of-this-world’. There will be challenging terrain to cross along with a good dose of adventure along the way!

Itinerary

This is a sample itinerary – subject to change at any time.

Day 1

Arrive in Windhoek on the first day of your safari (preferably in time for pre-dinner group briefing) and arrive back at Windhoek International Airport (Hosea Kutako) in time for flights leaving after 15:00.

Day 2

Depart Windhoek to our camp on the Skeleton Coast with lunch in Swakopmund en route. A Visit to the lichen field and a shipwreck will be included on your way to the camp.

Day 3 – 10

There is an easy rhythm to camp life with memorable evenings around the campfire, forming new friendships, sleeping under the evening stars. This gives you a bit of a taste of ‘Heaven on Earth’ with the Ugab River to Leeuwkop (lion’s head) in this landscape of undulating, multicoloured, and interesting geology. Here, you will witness some of the best riding terrains on the planet – so expect lots of fast-paced riding! Descend into the lower reaches of the Ugab river before reaching the lichen-covered coastal plains of the Skeleton Coast. The last night’s stay is in a luxury beach house.

Day 11

Transfer to Windhoek International Airport for flights departing around 15:00.

Internet:

Consider yourself ‘unplugged’ while on the safari. Cell phone reception is minimal at best and there is no internet connection at all, except in cities and larger towns. There are 12-volt usb chargers in our vehicles for small devices. However, they cannot charge power packs.

Insurance:

Having comprehensive medical insurance is a necessity for riding with us. You will be required to sign an indemnity form. When reading the policy you will discover that they take the well-being of our horses very seriously. For their sake, please be accurate about your weight, riding ability, and fitness.

Extra horse charge for riders 85 kg or over in riding gear (for our horses’ sake, please be accurate about your weight) and if you choose not to share accommodation or require a single tent.

The accommodation

Two nights in lodges, 8 nights camping wild with some unexpected luxuries like ice in your sundowners, hot bucket-showers, delicious food around companionable campfires and the magnificent southern stars arching over your comfortable bed at night.

You sleep in a warm, comfortable bedroll on a stretcher, tents are available if required although then you miss out on the spectacular stars overhead – few places on earth have zero light pollution…..this is one of those few.
